How long should my dog’s walk be? A Mumbai guide by breed
The short answer
Most healthy adult dogs in Mumbai do well on two walks a day, with the longer one before the sun is high. Length depends on breed, age and the weather that morning rather than on a single number.
By breed and age
Indies raised on Mumbai streets usually want more ground than minutes: a steady loop with time to stop and read everything. Labs and Goldens need the length as much as the sniffing, and get restless indoors when a walk is cut short.
Puppies and senior dogs are the two ends of the same rule: shorter walks, more often, and let the dog set the pace.
Mumbai heat and monsoon
Between March and May the pavement is the limit, not the dog. If the back of your hand cannot rest on the tar for five seconds, it is too hot for paws.
In monsoon the walk gets shorter and the drying off gets longer. Pick a route with less standing water and skip the stretch where the drains back up.
How to know it happened
If someone else takes your pup out, the length of the walk is the part you cannot see. A walk report gives you the route, the time and the breaks, so a short walk is a conversation rather than a guess.
